New Year, New Beginnings

As we begin 2009, I hope you share my excitement for many new beginnings, large and small. Our nation has a new President and we witnessed the surge of energy and optimism spread throughout our land on Inauguration Day. Many of us are beginning new semesters, which are always filled with renewed optimism. We also have a new beginning in TYCA National as officers begin their terms. As Chair, I look forward to the next two years of working with the Executive Committee representatives from the seven TYCA regional associations. I also am excited to be able to travel to most, if not all, of the regions for your conferences. Eric Bateman has moved to the role of Past Chair and he will continue in an active role of attending conferences and thankfully, reminding me of deadlines, reports to be filed, and the general rhythm of the TYCA year. We welcome Clint Gardner to the board, who will serve as Secretary of the organization for three years. TYCA also is proud to announce our new Webtender, Bradley Bleck. I want to extend a tremendous gratitude to Carolyn Calhoon-Dillahunt who contributed so much to our organization while serving as Secretary over the past three years.

If you have not yet heard about NCTE's National Day on Writing on October 20, 2009, please check out the webpage at http://www.ncte.org/action/dayonwriting.
NCTE is counting on TYCA members' active participation to make the venture successful. The goal is to showcase the range of writing that Americans do today in the National Writing Gallery, a digital archive. We encourage you to watch the website in the coming weeks for updates on ways you can get involved. In the meantime, spread the word throughout your schools and communities. It is my hope that each region can have its own Gallery featured as part of next year's regional conferences.

There are no harder working people than those who teach in two-year colleges. The demands on our time our great, but our enthusiasm for teaching and learning is greater. I am looking forward to all we can do together in the coming year.

Congratulations to you, Sandie, and to Clint as incoming national officers, and let me add many thanks to Carolyn for her excellent service to us all over the past three years.

The NCTE project sounds fascinating. I'll be participating, and passing the information along to other folks I know, too.
